Futures margin vs. margin on stocks

Buying securities on margin is not a good idea for most investors who are saving for a long-term goal such as retirement. A margin call will force you to boost your account equity either by adding additional cash and securities, or by selling existing holdings. Because margin calls often occur during periods of extreme volatility, you may be forced to sell securities at depressed prices.

Interpretations of FINRA’s Margin Requirements Rule

A participant may direct that funds held for him be invested by the trustee in insurance, annuity contracts, Series E Bonds, or in one or more of three specified securities which are listed on a stock exchange. Loans to purchase the stocks may be made to participants from funds of the trust, subject to approval of the administrative committee, which is composed of five participants, and of the trustee. The bank’s right to approve is said to be restricted to the mechanics of making the loan, the purpose being to avoid cumbersome procedures.

Margin is a risk hedging mechanism enforced by stock market regulators and exchanges, considering the worst case scenario to calculate required margin. (a) The Board of Governors interpreted this part in connection with proposed loans by a bank to persons who are purchasing shares of stock of American Telephone and Telegraph Company pursuant to its Employees’ Stock Plan. (1) Fund X agrees to have an “asset coverage” (as defined in the agreements) of 400 percent of all its borrowings, including the proposed borrowing, at the time when it takes down any part of the loan. (e) The Board reviewed this question upon at least one other occasion, and full consideration has again been given to the matter. Although the bank in that case had at best a limited discretion with respect to loans made by it in its capacity as trustee, the Board concluded that this fact did not affect the application of the regulation to such loans. (d) Furthermore, the same requirement of “good faith” is to be applied whether the statement accepted by the bank is signed by the borrower or by an officer of the bank.

Overview of Margin Requirements

This assumes, of course, that the amount of credit extended is such that the creditor is subject to the registration requirements of § 221.3(b). To open a margin account at a brokerage firm, an account holder first needs to post a certain amount of cash, securities or other collateral, known as the initial margin requirement. A margin account encourages investors, traders, and other market participants to use leverage to purchase securities with a total value that’s greater than the available cash balance in the account. A margin account is essentially a line of credit in which interest is charged on the outstanding margin balance. (c) The purchase of the debt securities issued by the shell corporation to finance the acquisition clearly involves purpose credit (as defined in § 221.2).

Account Protection

Variation margin – the other type of collateral – is paid daily from one side of the trade to the other, to reflect the current market value of the trade. Initial margin is held to cover the losses that could arise in the period between the defaulter’s last variation margin payment and the point at which the surviving party is able to hedge or replace the trade. In derivatives markets, initial margin is one of two types of collateral required to protect a party to a contract in the event of default by the other counterparty. Delivery margin is required to be blocked for all equity derivative contract outstanding positions, four days prior to contract expiry. The additional delivery margin blocked is released on its own after the settlement is over.

Due to the higher risk of fluctuation, the maintenance margin requirement remains 50% when the account is concentrated. Continuing with the previous example, imagine that the price of the stock doubled to $20 per share. The investor will need to repay the brokerage firm the $3,500 for the loan, leaving $16,500 after an initial investment of $6,500. While the stock increased in value by 100 percent, the investor’s $6,500 increased in value by more than 150 percent. Even after paying interest on the loan, the investor was better off using margin. An investor borrows funds from a brokerage firm to purchase shares and pays interest on the loan.

Initial Margin: Definition, Minimum Requirements, Example

Initial margin requirements vary by futures product and are typically a small percentage—from 2% to 12%—of the contract’s notional value (the cash equivalent value to owning the asset, or the total value of the contract). In equity margin trading, by contrast, an investor can borrow only up to 50% of the purchase price or total value of the trade (based on the Federal Reserve’s Regulation T, or “Reg T,” rule). Portfolio margining is an alternate margin methodology that sets margin requirements for an account based on the greatest projected net loss of all positions in a group of related securities such as a stock and options that reference the same stock. The computation relies on computer modeling to perform risk analysis using multiple pricing scenarios and these scenarios are designed to measure the theoretical gains or losses of the positions given changes in the underlying price. Accordingly, the margin required is based on the greatest loss that would be incurred in a portfolio if the value of its components move up or down by a predetermined amount.

A Concentrated Account is formed when one single position is equal to or greater than 60% of the total marginable market value.

  • (2) For purposes of this section, the maximum loan value of the collateral on the day of the withdrawal or substitution shall be used.
  • (3) The bank involved took part in arranging for such credit on better terms than it could extend under the provisions of this part.
  • While some such loans may qualify for exemption under §§ 221.1(b)(2), 221.4, 221.5 or 221.6, unless they do qualify for such an exemption they are subject to this part.

The inquiries are included in a set of guidelines in the format of questions and answers. (The guidelines are available pursuant to the Board’s Rules Regarding Availability of Information, 12 CFR part 261.) A glossary of terms customarily used in connection with insurance premium funding credit activities is included in the guidelines. Under a typical insurance premium funding Immediate Margin program, a borrower acquires mutual fund shares for cash, or takes fund shares which he already owns, and then uses the loan value (currently 50 percent as set by the Board) to buy insurance. Usually, a funding company (the issuer) will sell both the fund shares and the insurance through either independent broker/dealers or subsidiaries or affiliates of the issuer.

In the context of Mohs or slow Mohs surgery, frozen section analysis provides an accurate method to examine the surgical specimen. However, slide preparation takes time and requires a complex organization and workflow. The patient will have to wait for the results with an open wound for up to 24 hours before the surgery can be finalized. The Gustave Roussy Institute in France conducted a 2022 evaluation of the Histolog Scanner’s imaging capabilities for cervical lymph nodes in 44 patients with squamous cell carcinoma, finding a 93% agreement rate with conventional histology. These findings highlight the potential of the Histolog Scanner as a valuable tool for non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of cervical lymph nodes.

More formally, a support vector machine constructs a hyperplane or set of hyperplanes in a high- or infinite- dimensional space, which can be used for classification, regression, or other tasks. Intuitively, a good separation is achieved by the hyperplane that has the largest distance to the nearest training data points of any class (so-called functional margin), since in general the larger the margin the lower the generalization error of the classifier. Whereas the original problem may be stated in a finite dimensional space, it often happens that the sets to discriminate are not linearly separable in that space. For this reason, it was proposed that the original finite-dimensional space would be mapped into a much higher-dimensional space, presumably making the separation easier in that space. To keep the computational load reasonable, the mapping used by SVM schemes are designed to ensure that dot products may be computed easily in terms of the variables in the original space, by defining them in terms of a kernel function K(x,y) selected to suit the problem. The hyperplanes in the higher dimensional space are defined as the set of points whose inner product with a vector in that space is constant.
